New Direction/Repackage
What we want to achieve: We realized that there is a substantial amount of insight we do not have but will need to inorder to move into the record industry at a level we consider comfortable. As a producer I have natural talent that allows me to create a nice track (humbly spoken). But on the flip side we don't want to put out an album full of "OK" tracks that aren't mixed properly to the professional mastering level. I've started working towards understanding the concept and theory behind mastering to ensure what we put out is not just heard but understood. We want our fans to not just enjoy the music but know that we put the time and effort into the process to make it a great listening experience.
What else we want to achieve: When we first put BSMG together our brand was based around science terms; Dance Biology, Hip-Hop Chemistry, and Lounge Physics. The names relate to 'BeatScience' on an obvious level but the creative development and direction with this specific brand is limited. This is exactly why we took Dance Biology off of iTunes and plan to repackage and rerelease it this summer. The tracks on the updated album will be mastered and provide your ear with an easy and smooth sound. Our motivation behind the rebranding and repackaging of our product is strictly to make it a more attractive product.
One more thing to achieve: Understanding the complete process of putting out, promoting, distributing, networking, and effectively releasing an album is something we have yet to experience. As the guinea pig we will put ourselves in the line of fire to experience music industry growing pains. Besides branding and marketing our image we want artist and the like to expect quality work and support from BSMG. As with everything else in life experience counts more than a creative imagination with a lack of direction. We will continue to update everyone on our progress and as the rerelease of our first album comes closer we will get the word out.
In the mean time we will keep our eye out for artist/industry support that could assist us in making BSMG what we know it can be. Stay tuned and as always we appreciate your support!
When you get a chance check out our latest video blog which breaks down our new direction better than I can explain on here.

Hey Everyone…
We recently put a couple of samples on YouTube of tracks we put together. We decided to only put snippets of each track to give you all a tease for what’s to come. Check them out and let us know what you think.
Also, we have a meeting in the city on Wednesday with a local artist manager. We’re going to meet at an open mic night on
Hope everyone is having a great day!

Label Development - PO Box, Lawyer, File Backups
Here are a few things that we've accomplished over the past few days...
Created a PO Box specifically for our label - This allows you to have an official business address other than your home address for those of us who don't have office space just yet. This also provides a layer of safety preventing others from having access to your home address by posting it on your website or on a business card.
Lawyer - We are working with an entertainment lawyer to ensure we're on track with protecting our label on the legal front. We have put in a lot of effort into developing BeatScience Music Group and don't want it to be taken away by a careless mistake on our part.
File Backups - One of the most important things you can do when having a business is to backup your files. Most of us only use electronic files which is certainly more convenient but it provides the likelihood of you losing your files during a power surge, computer dies, or someone accidentally deletes your files. Here at BSMG our computers are on a constant backup hard drive that wirelessly provides backups of our files 24/7. We have recently started backing up our files with an offsite secure server via an online provider. If there is a fire or theft in our office/home our files that we have used to create and maintain the label will be safe in nearly any circumstance. The moral of the story is to keep a good filing system and ensure your backup system is even more reliable.
It's been a long day at both jobs..... (I have a day job)

DC is Our New Home!
We’re made it to DC and we are now getting settled into our new place. I think we made record time with unpacking all of our stuff and getting it put in place.
Now back to business! Tonight I’m going to another one-to-one session at the apple store to further refine my producing skills. This week we have a meeting with a manager in the DC area who manages several artists ranging from R&B, Pop, and Rock. Even if we don’t find and artist we’re interested in it will be good experience and practice for us. We will keep you posted and certainly appreciate everyone’s patience with our move.

A Phone Call & Business Cards
Last night we received a phone call from an individual who manages a local DC artist. The gentleman who called received our business card through another person we gave it to last week. It’s a pretty awesome feeling when your name gets out there and others start to seek you for support.
Handing out business cards is one of the easiest and most efficient ways of getting your name out there. We leave a card everywhere I go. We were out the other night at a restaurant and we left our biz card with the tip. I was in an elevator the other day and a small sign in a frame was posted advertising a personal trainer. Guess what I did? I slid a card in the corner of the frame for everyone and anyone to see (without blocking the original advertisement).
Enjoy your Wednesday!

Chiropractic Promotions? (Crack a back and take a biz card)
I met the two admin ladies where I had to sign-in and fill out the patient intake forms. One thing I've learned is that people respond and are more receptive to what you have to say if you're not only charismatic but polite. I made an effort to put a smile on their face with friendly conversation which ended me discussing our record label. All the friendly conversation payed off because when I gave them by biz card their reactions were positive followed by a response of "That's whats up, I love music and listen to it all the time. I've got some playing right now."
It was the perfect response from two people I've never met and tried to sell them an idea about something they've never heard of or really cared about prior to me walking in the door.
When the Doc was done cracking my back and neck what do you think was the first thing I mentioned to him? "Thanks for the help, let me give you my business card. My partner and I recently started a record label and released our first album on iTunes last month. You should check it out."
His response, "Cool I definately will."
Who knows if he will take the time to check the website out or even listen to or buy our music. However is friend, brother, sister, father, girlfriend, boyfriend, or even his neighbor might. Opportunity knocks every where you go. You just have to answer the door and step up to the plate.
Be inspired... I am everyday. I want to succeed and you should to! (Dr. Phil?)
Reading is Fundamental - "Start & Run Your Own Record Label"
Up to this point, pg 53, the book has dozens of stories about actual record label execs who started out small ended up big and ultimately went independent. One of the biggest and most obvious benefits of being independent is that all of your profit is yours. There were several indie labels within that book that started out as artist who weren't able to get the big record they wanted and created their own independent label.
One of the greatest tips in the book is about taking your business seriously. Don't be afraid to say confidently to those who ask, "I own my own record label." From my own personal experience the people you talk to in a confident tone are substantially more interested in what you have to say because you command their attention. It's like any other topic in life you could think of where you have to get someones attention in order for them to not only hear you but listen.
The book itself is top rated on Amazon and I recommend picking it up. It gives you a lot of basics and inspiring stories of others who have already traveled down the road you're taking.
I'll fill you in more as I get through each chapter....
Check back soon for updates..
100 Hits Per Week
We’re happy to announce that with in the first three weeks since the launch of our website we have averaged 100 hits per week. This is exciting news for us because the counter only accepts new IP’s which means every visit is a new visit. Our goals are to steadily increase that number by each week/month. Thank you for your support. Don’t forget to check out our first release on iTunes, “Dance Biology.”
Also, take a look at “Friends of BSMG” where you’ll see some of our supporters and friends.

One-to-One = Exposure (Legal?)
Yesterday I attended my second one-to-one training at the Apple store. The gentleman’s name who has been showing me the ropes of Logic is TJ. He’s been a great resource to help me further understand what Logic Express can do for you musically. We discussed what it takes to “Master” a song and song structure. I feel like I’ve got a pretty good idea on the two it’s just a matter of playing with the options on Logic and lots of practice. If you have the option of purchasing One-to-One training, at the time of your computer purchase, I would recommend it for Logic if you’re taking it seriously. As I said previously it’s only $100 and totally worth it if you can afford to put out the extra cash.
On a side note….. When I was done with the training I went around to every single display Mac Book/iMac computer and pulled up our website. I figure since I had already been there for an hour sitting with TJ no one would really notice me walking around because their eyes/mind became comfortable with my presence. It was great… I’m not sure if it was legal but I was looking to ask for forgiveness and not permission…. Innovation is a bonus… Always think of ways to put the word out on what you have to offer.
On a side-side note…. While at work today, on my lunch break, I went around to every single copy and break room through out the entire 8 story building and posted the release of our first album; Dance Biology. I put them up on a cork boards in every room with a biz card attached. This may be a little OCD but I made sure all of my tacs used to hang the flyer matched. I think its really tacky, get it, tacky? …… to have something hanging up that you’re trying to sell with multi-colored tacks or pins. I think it shows a lack of effort and organization. Again, OCD, but it shows pride in what we’re offering and is less distracting than a rainbow of tacks…
Almost hump day…. See you then..
P.S. I’m reading this book on how to start up an indie record label. It’s provided some pretty awesome insight to the do’s and don’ts a lot of it is common sense but a fair bit of it takes experience. Have an awesome day…
