It's Been A While - Government Client

 Hello Hello....

It's been a while since I last blogged.  As of today, we are working with a Government client in Washington, D.C.  This is a our first Gov client which is pretty exciting being that we are in D.C. and there are so many interconnected agencies and departments within this city.

If you follow our Facebook page you will see what we have been working on with this particular client.  In a nut shell we were given four short pieces of audio, from interviews, with significantly poor quality.  If I was the producer would have told the sound engineer and to throw them out and record from scratch.

Ultimately we were able to improve the audio on three of four cuts.  We used an audio clean-up sw called SoundSoap.  If you are interested in working on audio clean-up it is a nice piece of sw to invest in for about $50.00.

That's all we have for now.  There will be more to come.  We appreciate you taking the time to read.

What's Next - More Ent Law

Now that the film competition is over things have slowed down a bit.
(when I say "slowed down" I mean we don't have 20 people counting on
us to compose an original peice for a film we have never seen within
in six hours)

Right now we are waiting to hear back from our lawyer on contracts he
is putting together for us. It's great to know we're doing the right
thing by getting a lawyer now vs having to get a lawyer down he road
when something goes wrong. Legal guidance is rather expensive process
but well worth knowing we did everything we could to protect ourselves
and biz.

I'd like to give a big shout-out to Mr. Eric Emerick, our COO, for
being the point man for the legal reqs of BeatScience Music Group,
LLC. He's amazing and the backbone of our biz.

Keeping Score at DC48

Good evening everyone

It's been a while since I last blogged, with good reason. We have been busy everyday/night working with clients and developing BSMG. We have been working mostly with vocal artists since we started BSMG. We breifly and uneventfully worked with a client music for a website but he ended up moving to FL for work and things changed.

We went to a Film/Post Production event this past week. We met some pretty awesome people who were semi-surprisingly supportive. Lucky for us there was only one other composer/music producer there (out of 50-60 people). I went to his website and he has a great sound using mostly live instruments. That alone is impressive and rare.

To keep this short, with in two hours of getting home that night we received an email from a producer. Without hesitation asked if we would score his movie. He is entering a pretty big film competition this up coming weekend. The competition started D.C. almost 10 years ago and it's called The 48hour Film Project. Check out the details via the website ref below.

We met the producer this Saturday (yesterday) and agreed to score his film. It's an exciting time for us. The competition starts Friday at 7pm ending 48 hours later. We will have about 7-9 hours to score the film (it can't be longer than 7 mins per 48film Project rules).

http://www.48hourfilm.com/dc/

We will keep you posted as the week moves along and we begin to prepare.

This Week in BSMG News (kinda like CNN but better)

This week we have been fairly and happily swamped with client work.

We are waiting for a contract to come through for one of our clients.

We spoke to a potential new client today and found out she teamed up with a rapper to become a duo. We are coordinating a meet up this weekend.

We emailed newly established client, AD, to let him know we are gearing up to start the development of his demo songs. He is going for an Al Green/Adele mix type sound.

Tomorrow we are meeting a film editor in MD to discuss his music needs and interest in what BSMG can provide.

This has all happened in the past week which gives us late nights and a lot to be excited about. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted.

P.S. Big shout out to Eric Emerick, BSMG COO. I couldn't do this without him. He's the backbone of what you read on this blog.

American Idol = A.D.

A blog or so ago we talked about our run in with the "American Idol" waiter at the Melting Pot (we will call him A.D. for now). A couple days after we initially met, A.D. contacted us with an interest in discussing potential music collaboration opportunities.

This afternoon, after playing phone tag for a couple days, we met up with A.D. over lunch. The conversation went pretty smooth. We chatted a bit about where each of us is from, interest, etc... and of course music biz. All in all I think the three of us (including Eric, BSMG COO) walked away excited and eager to work together. A.D. gave me input on the type of sound he is interested and it appears we have similar taste. Some of his favorite artists include Adele, John Legend, and Al Green. One of his favorite all time songs is "Love and Happiness" by Al Green. This is an absolute classic released almost 40 years ago on HI Records. I actually have the original record/album (real record) in my studio.

So yeah, things are moving along with A.D. and we are now in the development stages of creating a demo song he can sing over. We have another client at the moment I am putting in a lot of hours on. Once that project begins to wrap up we'll be moving onto the A.D. project.

Clients - 5 in 24 Hours?

We mentioned on Monday that we met a waiter at a D.C. restaurant who made it to Hollywood on American Idol.  He called and left me a vm this afternoon.  It is good sign to see he is so eager to get to work.  Once we get a chance to chat with him over any potential collaboration I will fill you in.  I left him a vm earlier tonight to call back when he gets a chance.

I created a track for a female vocalist who use to be in a band called "DeVille".  I gave her the song late last week and she got back to us this evening via email.  She said that she "really liked" which is always flattering.  We shot her a response with a little more detail on what we can offer.  Once I get something back from her I will fill you in as well.

We have an artist we have been working with over the past couple of months.  If you recall, his name is "Brian The Gifted" out of Cleveland, Ohio.  I put together a nice Hip-Hop instrumental for him and he transformed the track to a new level.  It has a great sound and solid delivery.  We heard back from him this evening and we should be moving forward to square away contract/legal details.  We'll fill you in as things progress.

Some of you may remember Kim Lannear.  I have blogged about her in previous blog postings.  She is Jazz vocalist out of Brooklyn, NY.  I created a track for her several months back and we have put our ideas together to make a solid song.  Once she gets time to come down to record we'll have something we can play for everyone to hear.  More to come on that as well.

We heard back from Breasia Studios yesterday evening.  They have an artist who they are developing who has serious talent for being so young.  (We don't give out details or names of clients until our relationship becomes legally official)  I have been discussing with Breasia over the past couple weeks on how we can support the development of their artists through our music.  I have been building a catalog of music to send their way and with in the next couple of weeks we hope to have a more clear consensus on how we plan to move forward.  The artist they are working with has a lot of promise and we would be honored to play a part in his development.

As you can see the last week has been quite busy and busy is good.

Stay tuned and I hope you enjoyed my super long blog posting above.

Melting Pot & Birthday Wishes

Yesterday We treated a friend of ours to dinner for her birthday at this incredible restaurant named "Melting Pot" in Washington D.C. While we were there I asked our waitress if someone could sing our friend happy birthday (Almost every major restuarant I have been to in the past decade sings Happy Birthday.)

She mentioned that the waiter serving customers at an adjacent table just returned from Hollywood for "American Idol" auditions. Sadly he did not get selected for the next round but we were impressed that he was able to get that far. I asked our waitress if she could have him sing Happy Birthday to our friend. I figured we could kill two birds with stone by making the night specaial for our friend and checking out local talent for BSMG.

With in a few minutes the waiter came to our table, introduced himself with a smile and confidence and happily sung Happy Birthday. All three of us at the table were blown away by his voice and and impressed by his belief in his talent. Long story semi-short, I gave the gentlemen our biz card and continued our delicious dinner.

One last....
The waiter mentioned that he has been recording but the studio is in Richmond, VA (2 hours south). I told him we have access to a studio about 25 mins away and he smiled with look of interest and excitement for a potential opportunity. If he does follow-up with a phone call or email I'll be sure to fill you in.

Taxi Submission's - Optimism

It’s been a while since I last updated our blog.  If you have been reading for a while you may recall me mentioning our use of Taxi.  If you have not, Taxi is an A&R (Artist & Repertoire) agency that receives music listing from the entertainment industry.  The listings come from publishers, music supervisors, record companies, and ad agencies looking for music to fill a void in their production.

I submitted 6 songs to two separate listings.  Unfortunately none of our songs were selected for the particular listing we applied to.  As disappointing as it maybe, I am not upset we did not get picked up.  It was my first time using Taxi and there will be hundreds more listings to come in the future (New listings are available on the 1st and 15th of each month).

The most interesting and exciting part about submitting music to Taxi is they critique your music.  I have had dozens and dozens of people listen to my music.  Nine times out of ten with a response of, “I like it” or “That’s pretty good.”  With Taxi there is music directors/supervisors/A&R’s who have the technical experience with music that I’ll need to improve.

Critique on our track titled “Subliminal”: “I loved the mood created by this piece. It was unique and emotional. However, the track didn't showcase your compositional skills very well. I think tracks with more sophisticated orchestrations would work more effectively for this listing.”

(Subliminal can be heard on our website under “Productions”)

The information provided by Taxi allows me to go back to the drawing board to see how I can improve a specific aspect of my music.  Again, I am not thrilled about not getting selected, but an honest and insightful critique will do for now.

Thanks for reading….

Techno or Techyes

Things are going well today as usual.  I received a text message from Brian-The-Gifted, a Hip-Hop artists out of Cleveland, asking if I can make Techno music.  He knows of another artists who may be interested in collaborating with us over a Techno track.  Techno hasn't been a high point of concentration for us but we have several songs in our catalog that could work.  If not, I am always up for putting together something new.  Aside from that, getting a potential new client to work with is new business!

Have a great night!

Orchestra Untitled - 1 of 3

I have been looking at an industry listing from Taxi asking for Orchestral instrumentals.  I started to put a song together tonight and I am happy with it so far.  It has a light mood/fairy tale theme to it.  I don't know that I have a specific direction I am going in with it but I do want to keep it warm and light.   I have until April 6th to get 2-3 songs together.  That is plenty of time, pending other projects, but I would like to get them completed within the next couple of weeks.  Check out the below industry listing from Taxi.

"NEW LISTING -- ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS - from Documentary to Feature Film Styles - needed by a Music Producer who has a new music library with Major distribution and has already signed over 100 TAXI composers. Only top-tier composers are needed, this is a super high bar! He said he's "not messing around on this one." Your instrumentation must sound authentic, meaning strings, woodwinds, brass, etc., need to sound 100% realistic. He further adds "if the track has any solo violin, it HAS to be a LIVE violin, not synthetic." He is open to both domestic and international writers. Additionally, this listing is run only through TAXI and is an exclusive deal with you keeping 100% of the writer's share. All submissions need to be Broadcast Quality (excellent home recordings are fine). Please submit two to three instrumentals online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Thursday, April 6, 2011. TAXI # S110406IN"

Potential

There is a neighbor of ours who lives in our building that we met
several months ago. She mentioned a while back that she use to sing
in a band.

I ran into her this afternoon after work on the metro/subway. (She
happens to work in the building directly adjacent to mine and we work
the same hours.)

She told me that she's been busy recording over the past week or so
for a BMI song contest. With that sparking my interest I asked her if
she was interested me sending her a track to put vocals on. She said
yes.

I came home tonight and made a demo song for her. I'm going to try
and get it to her tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

TV, Film, and Ideas

We have submitted over 8 songs in the past week to listings via Taxi.com.  We submitted another one today for an Oil Company (they won't give the name) looking for a 60 second song for marketing/commercial.  It was certainly one of the more difficult listings I have applied to.  I attempted to make a song from scratch for the listing but ended up using 3 songs from our catalog.

We'll be getting a Yes/No response back from Taxi within the next few weeks.  We are excited to see what the response will be and of course hope to get a bite on one of them.

Eric, BSMG COO, emailed several local directors/producers in the D.C. area today.  He has a co-worker who was in a film titled "Respire" and she has a few contacts in the industry.  We are looking to get an email response sometime this week.

We have a  meeting with an owner of a D.C. recording studio on Friday.  We are not quite sure what to expect out of that meeting but it appears to be more of an idea exchange discussion.  The potential industry contacts and resources that type of relationship brings could be invaluable.

As you can see we have been quite busy and are loving every second of it.  We hope all is well with you and look forward to giving you our next update.  Have a great night/day.

Another One (two).... Taxi's On My Mind

I just submitted to two more industry (instrumental) listings via Taxi.com.  I submitted 2 songs to one listing and 3 songs to another listing.   The first one called for "World" music (instrumental) and the other wanted "Orchestral" music.  I happen to already have a few of both genre's in our music catalog. Each submission (per song) is $5.00.  This is meant to deter users from submitting anything and everything to a listing.

Within 2-4 weeks of the listing being closed out (tomorrow) we should get an answer from Taxi of a "Yes" or a "No."  It's always an interesting feeling to put your passion out on display.  I am incredibly proud of the music we put out and I am confident others will enjoy it.   I guess we will have to wait and see what they think.  Don't worry, even if I get denied I will be sure to post it.  According to Taxi, a user (me) typically won't get feedback if you're denied song placement.  Feedback would be great but we'll see what happens.

Taxi - Submission Success!

So I just submitted one of our songs to Taxi.com.  This is my first time submitting music via Taxi to an industry listing.  Check out the below listing to get some insight on the listing:

"LIGHT CLASSICAL-STYLE INSTRUMENTALS needed by global Music Publisher creating playlists for public environmental spaces (including malls, restaurants, etc) as well as placing music in Film and TV. Compositions should be original and/or public domain covers in styles ranging from the Baroque and/or Chamber traditions (a la Vivaldi, Haydn) to more Romantic and 20th Century styles (Faure, Saint-Saens). Orchestra samples MUST sound authentic, production warm and resonant. Compositions should be accessible to a large audience, with well-developed melodic motifs and arrangements that are appropriate within the genre. No solo piano or guitar, please. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). We recently ran this as listing #S101102IN, so if you submitted to that listing, send in new material this time around. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or via CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Wednesday, February 23, 2011.

Taxi.com - Members Only

A few months ago I mentioned we were thinking about joining a website called Taxi.com.  We finally joined as of last night.

Taxi is a song placement company that facilitates the process of receiving/selling your music.  A Music Supervisor, Publisher, or Record Company would submit an industry listing to Taxi with a description of the music they are looking for.  As a member you have access to the listings which come out on a bi-weekly basis.  The more diverse your catalog of music the more opportunities you will have.

We are pretty excited about the opportunities Taxi could potentially bring us.  As we submit our music to listings we will keep you in the loop.  As always, thank you for reading.

Hustle Hustle Hustle

I have been walking all over Washington D.C. for the past 3 hours. I
have been going into every restaurant and retail shop that I think
would mesh well with our "Wine & Champagne" CD. I didn't and don't
want to just hand out CD's. My focus is specific to the clientele
that will most likely buy or even browse in these local businesses.

So far I have been to about 10 locations and all but one was willing
to help by either playing our music or even considering it. Every
little bit of exposure helps and I am willing to do next to anything
to make sure our hard work pays off and we succeed.

Valentines Day Part II

This past Saturday our apartment building held a Valentines Day social
event with food, drinks, and our music. It all went extremely well.
We had a chance to network with some local music fans and sell CD's.

Last night, due to the overwhelming amount of leftover food another
Valentines Day event was held. It was a bit of the same as the
previous Saturday's event but we were able to mingle with a few new
people. I met a local drum player who lives in our building who was
into our music. We exchanged biz cards and I sent him an email this
morning to meet up to talk music. I'm not sure how, if at all, he is
interested in collaborating but I am always open to making music with
other musicians.

I will keep you updated on how things play out.

Side note, we are working with the hip-hop artist I mentioned last
week, Brian The-Gifted. We sent him 3 tracks and he picked one that
he is now mastering. We are meant to receive it sometime this week.
We're looking forward to hearing the final product.

On to the next one....

I was in a bit of a slump yesterday with some of the indirect redirection we've made over the past couple of weeks.  Eric, BSMG COO, and I sat down and discussed our game plan for creating a solid structure for our business.  Overall we both feel better and it is a constant reminder of what good communication can get you.  It gave us both relief, new energy, and a new direction.

And....we received exciting news today from an artist who is interested in using a few of our hip-hop tracks.  We don't have solid details yet but we will keep you posted on how things work out over the next couple of weeks.

Focus Focus Focus

There are times where my imagination runs wild with ideas on any and every scale.  I am the creative type and thinking in a straight line is not an intuitive process.  Every now and I again I find myself running full steam ahead but ending up with an empty pocket and completely off of the page we started on.

Making music is a passion and a natural ability I have that will get us half way to where we want to be.  The other half will be organization, planning, and focusing on a single path to get us to 100%.  I have never been the type, nor will I be, to call myself a failure or punish my self-esteem with negativity.  I have learned the best approach to such adversity is to sit down, think, plan, and then execute.  Each obstacle is different but all need the same attention (some more than others.)

Business Lesson of The Day:  Know what you want and continue to learn on how to get it.

Game Changing Film Makers

"The internet is lousy with lists of ‘The Top 100′ this and ‘The 50 All-time Greatest’ that. And generally speaking, these ranked run-downs don’t offer much in the way of surprises or thought-provoking insights (unless they carry the Entertainment Weekly stamp, of course). But the gallery that the folks over at BlackVoices.com have cooked up for Black History Month is definitely worth checking out. In their 30 Black Hollywood Game Changers, you’ll find the obvious candidates — Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing), Tyler Perry (the Madea ouevre), and Melvin Van Peebles (Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song) — rubbing shoulders with less predictable, unsung filmmakers like Oscar Micheaux, the first African-American to direct a movie (1919′s The Homesteader). Micheaux was also the same guy who introduced the world to renown actor Paul Robeson. Clicking through the list I was especially happy to see Ossie Davis’ name come up. After all, most people still think of Davis first and foremost as an actor, but he also had serious chops behind the camera. I’ll never forget seeing Cotton Comes to Harlem as part of a drive-in double feature as a kid along with Shaft’s Big Score! Bill Duke was another pleasant surprise — his gritty 1992 crime flick Deep Cover starring Jeff Goldblum and Laurence Fishburne is a loco gem itching for rediscovery. Actually, there are a lot of great titles like that on this list begging to be seen again. So why not give it a look. Hopefully a few years from now, this gallery will have a lot more names on it than just 30 ."

Black History Month: Black History Month actually started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate the American people about African-Americans' cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.

One for Two?

Every now and again I get a musical brain-fart and putting a song together can be challenging.  I am creating mood music for this upcoming Valentines Day event.  My intent was to have two songs made and mastered before I shut my eyes each night this week.  It looks like tonight I failed to meet that quota.

Although, I am ok with missing that self-generated mark.  My goal has always been to focus on quality and not quantity.  The song I finished tonight is a good one but it was a challenge to arrange and complete.  Some nights are more fluid than others and some nights are dry as a bone.

My creativity was on its own schedule tonight and I am looking forward to round two tomorrow night.

Valentines Day - A Cocktail Affair

This Saturday we will be working a Valentines Day event at our
building's lounge in D.C. We'll be playing our music, promoting our
CD, and mingling (networking) with the guest. We started putting
together a larger playlist of music and my intent is to finish two
songs each day this week. I completed two today and if things go right
I should have 10-12 additional songs for the event. We'll keep you
posted.

Also - The collaboration with Kim Lannear is moving along quite well.
She will be sending me a new cut of "Mr Brown Eyes" this Saturday

Thanks

Meet-up

Several blogs ago we talked about joining a D.C. Meet-up group. The
Meet-up group is a group of people who get together at different
venues to discuss their musical works to exchange ideas and network.
Not sure if you remember but we met our first artist Kim Lannear at
our very first meet-up. This Friday the group is heading to a local
restaurant for dinner and some drinks. This will be a great chance to
hang in an informal setting with good people and exchange more ideas.

Thanks

The Purple Cow - Remarkable?

I have been reading this marketing book titled "Purple Cow" written by Seth Godin.  This book discusses the methods and benefits of setting your business apart from every other business in your field.

My favorite quote so far: "The reason it's so hard to follow the leader is this: The leader is the leader because he did something remarkable.  And that remarkable this is now taken-it's no longer remarkable when you do it."  - Seth Godin

77 Most Unforgettable Movie Songs

Check out Spinner.com's list of the "77 Most Unforgettable Movie Songs"

"77. Coolio, 'Gangsta's Paradise' ('Dangerous Minds,' 1995)
Michelle Pfeiffer's character uses tough love to keep inner-city students in school and away from crime in 'Dangerous Minds,' but the real crime was that Coolio stole an entire Stevie Wonder song to create his biggest hit. -- Jason Persse"

(I grew up in the mid 90's and this song is definitely in my top 10 of memorable moments in movie history.) - BSMG

"31. Three 6 Mafia, 'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp' ('Hustle & Flow,' 2005)
People were shocked when Three 6 Mafia won the Oscar for Best Original Song, but seriously, stop b----ing already! Did you really expect a pimp to rap about flowers and blue skies? If that hot a-- "recording booth" with soundproofing made of drink holders in 'Hustle and Flow' doesn't prove the struggles of a Memphis hustler, we don't know what does. -- DB"

(I never considered this one of my favorite songs, but none the less, I am mentioning it now so it must be memorable.) - BSMG

"23. Bryan Adams, '(Everything I Do) I Do It for You' ('Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,' 1991)
This syrupy ballad from Bryan Adams shot to No. 1 in every country with a film projector after this blockbuster came to town. It still sounds a million times better than Kevin Costner's pathetic attempt at an English accent. -- JP"

(I remember dancing in my 5th grade formal to this song.  My dates name was Crystal (last name?) That was such a long long long time ago.) - BSMG

"1. Queen, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' ('Wayne's World,' 1992)

By itself, this operatic rocker has nothing to do with "party time," but when the tape is popped into the deck of Garth's "Mirth Mobile" in 'Wayne's World,' Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' gives rise to music's most excellent cinematic moment. Let the triumphant head-banging begin! -- JP"

(Wayne's World is a classic 90's movie but I still have a hard time with this song being number one.  Again, great song but Wayne and Garth don't do it much justice.) - BSMG

A Hip-Hop Affair

I am working on a couple of sample tracks for a Hip-Hop artist out of Cleveland, OH.  His name is Brian-The-Gifted and you can catch him on iTunes with his single "I Don't Know Why."  In my opinion, his delivery and flow is a mix of Nas and Snoop.  No matter what your thoughts are on his sound there is no doubt he is talented.

For those of you who have been following our blog over the past 8 months probably recall a Hip-Hop track titled "Chop it Up."  I sent a sample of that song to him and he loved it.  I have an eclectic catalog of Hip-Hop music and I'm confident he will be into the tracks I send his way.

Meadows & Tchaikovsky (Wine & Champagne # 12)

It is the 26th of January and there is about 6 inches of snow on the ground outside.  It's a cold night and watching the snow fall from the studio is quite peaceful.

For those of you who went on iTunes and listened to "Wine & Champagne" have heard track number 12 titled "Meadows."  It is a track deeply influenced by Mr. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky who, in my eyes, is the most brilliant composer of all time  The direct influence for "Meadows" is from the Nut Cracker soundtrack, Ballet, Op. 71_Act 2, No. 12 - Arabian Dance.  It is a beautiful piece of timeless art.  You can check it out on Amazon or on iTunes.

Check out "Wine & Champagne" on iTunes to hear the influence.  This track in particular would be perfect for a dramatic film soundtracks, I can picture it being played during the end film credits.

Wine & Champagne - Released 24 Jan 2011

  It's a big day....

We are proud to announce the official release of "Wine & Champagne" on iTunes.  This CD is meant to provide the world of entertainment (seriously, the whole world) a chance to hear what BSMG can provide.

One of the biggest motivations behind getting this CD out was being asked,"Can I hear your music?"  Of course I carried a CD or two around with me but I can't say I was always prepared for that question.  At the very least when we run into a music supervisor, program director, artist, or other producers we can say, "Check us out on iTunes."  It's certainly not our last step in this process but it is a big start.

It's a proud moment for us and I hope each of you takes a few minutes to listen to (and buy) what we have worked so hard for.  Everything you watch (TV/Film) and listen to (radio) has music in it, around it, and behind it.  Our intent was to fill each of those with the music that we create.  For those of you overseas the CD should be available on iTunes as well.  Like I said before, if you don't have access to iTunes and you want a copy please let us know.  It will be shipped to you at no cost.
Search iTunes: "Wine & Champagne" or "BeatScience"

Hope you have a great night and we look forward to your feedback.

BSMG Music Licensing - Wine & Champagne

As we mentioned yesterday "Wine & Champagne" will be available this week on iTunes.  The purpose and intent behind releasing a CD is to get us exposure to all platforms of music licensing.

We are currently working with an artist, Kim Lannear, who is interested in putting one of our songs into TV and film.   She provided the vocals on a track we titled "Mr Brown Eyes" (MBE)  This song in particular is not on our CD but is something both of us are excited for you to hear.  MBE would work well in a Romantic Comedy and especially a Middle-Eastern themed production.

For those of you unfamiliar with music licensing here is a brief breakdown:

Music licensing is intended to ensure that the creators of musical works get paid for their work. A purchaser of recorded music owns the media on which the music is stored, not the music itself. A purchaser has limited rights to use and reproduce the recorded work.  For BSMG this includes licensing music for TV, Commercials, Artists, Reality TV, Restaurants, Entertainment, etc..

Wine & Champagne - Coming Soon Worldwide

  What's up everybody...

I have been blogging about our "Wine & Champagne" CD for a couple of months now.  We sold hard copy CD's last month during a local holiday event and have sold a few since.  Over the past few weeks we have been preparing to release a digital version on iTunes.  The original album had 12 tracks but our new album, soon to be released on iTunes, will have 13.  I made a song at the last minute and it happen to fit the new album version perfectly.  The release date has not been fully established but we expect it to be sometime within the next couple weeks.  We will keep you posted on our progress with the release.

For all of you that do not have iTunes we are also releasing it on Zune, Amazon, Napster, and many other worldwide digital music resources.  If you don't have access to any of the music resources let us know.  We will ship a CD to a fan anywhere in the world....  We appreciate the support!

Coming in 2011 - TV and Music

American Idol (AI) – It’s going to be an impressive transformation from the previous years of AI. No Simon Cowell and a new rock legend, Steven Tyler. I am excited and looking forward to hearing the latest and greatest talent from all over the country. Its first episode was Wednesday of this week with a follow-up on Thursday. It’s always interesting to watch the auditions where some are amazing and some are not so amazing.

Kanye West & Jay-Z – “Watch the Throne” – For anyone who has listened to mainstream music over the past decade is well aware of the impact Jay-Z and Kanye West have had on global pop-culture. Their highly anticipated “Watch the Throne” album does not yet have a release date.

Their first single H.A.M (Hard as A Mother-Fu***), was released 11 January 2011 and has the Twista/Bone Thugs-n-Harmony style known as Syncopated Bounce.  The anticipation for their collaborative album continues to grow and it’s something we look forward to.

We have great updates coming up for BSMGin 2011. Stay tuned with what’s next for us.

Meeting Minutes

Tonight was our initial biz meeting with our collaboration artist, Kim
Lannear. We have been exchanging ideas via email for a while and
during tonights meeting we started negotiating the licensing contract.
It was a smooth discussion and refreshing to work with her because
she has a genuine interest in the music. We agreed on a couple of
modifications to the licensing contract and will be sending her
another draft later this week.

She will be sending me the music files with in the next week or two so
I can begin to mix and master the song. Mastering itself is an
exploration that I am still working out but I have no doubt that
between her and I we can make an awesome final product.

Red Eyes and Good Times

Today was another productive day of getting things done.  I spent nearly the entire day on my computer learning more about mixing and the art of mastering music.  My eyes are burning at the moment from staring at the computer screen.

For all of you interested in learning more about Logic Express YouTube is a great resource. Most tutorials for Logic are between 2-10 mind long. That may no seem like a lot of time but it's sufficient when performing a search for a specific setting in mind. They good tutorials get right to the point and are typically very helpful.  (As a tip I recommend reading a few of the reviews prior to spending your valuable time watching a useless video that can only confuse you even more.)

Also.....

Eric, BSMG COO, designed a pretty incredible piece of album cover art for our Wine & Champagne CD.  We plan on putting it up on iTunes with in the next month or so.  The release date will be posted on here and our website.

We are done for the night and we hope you had a great weekend.

Productivity and Success

This past week we managed to make solid progress on a few of the goals we had.  We began negotiating a couple of potential business and continued to grow our network of contacts.

The collaboration with the artist in NYC has been coming along.  We've been sending feedback on the song via email over the past week.  She is very talented and its been a great process up to this point.  It has been fairly informal up to this point which was our intention from the beginning.  Without a long list of clients it is difficult to make demands or have 360 expectations of someone when both of you are starting out.  We waited things out a bit on the formal contracts side.  But we are now comfortable and confident with moving forward on official terms/agreements.  We sent an email to her tonight explaining our interest and should receive a response within a couple of days.

A big part of me always wants to go hard on details and expectations from the beginning of any business deals/discussions we approach.  However my instinctual reality and "real" reality, at times, are two different things.  As we go along we learn what's right and what's not so right.  Its actually exciting to see the mistakes we've made.  No matter if it is success or failure it was something that learned.  Every bit of knowledge we obtain, painful or pleasant, gets us closer to where we want to be.

Artist Collaboration

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening…. (Depending what part of the world you’re in.)

In November of last year I talked about an artist that we met at a Jam Session at Breasia Recording Studios.  She is a big fan of Jazz with a side of funk.  I sent her a track a couple of months ago and it is now coming together.  She and I exchanged emails last night sending the track, with her vocals, back and forth.  It is always a pleasure to get feedback from another artist.  I sent her another track last night titled “Brazil.”  I used a few Drums, High-Hat, Congo, and added a little reverb for that live sound effect.  Eric and I really like it and we hope she appears to as well.

Once we work out the details with her my intent is get in a recording studio and have her record the initial track we sent.  Our studio does not have the acoustics or full equipment to give the song the professional engineering justice it deserves.  We will keep you updated as things progress.  She is eager and excited and it looks like thing will continue to move forward.

Not Enough Time and a Side of Frustration

There are a million things I want to do with my music and know exactly how I can get it there.  The limit in life is time.  The time I spend on other things prevents me from putting our music out to get licensed.  I have never been much of a patient type of person but to keep my stress level and relationships in tact I need to work on it.  I get frustrated with the process and of business development but know it's a part of growing pains.

I am extremely fortunate to have my partner, in business and life, to keep me grounded.  He is amazing and wonderfully talented.  With zero doubt I know that I could not do this without him.  (This is a bit of an emotional blog but sometimes business is not as simple as just business.)  We will succeed through frustration, success, failure, and the optimism of knowing we are the only thing that can stop us.

We hope you have an awesome night.  We will be back at it again tomorrow and are happy to have you with us.

Good night

A Remix

Most of you know about our "Wine & Champagne" CD that we recently
started selling hard copies of. One of the difficult parts with
learning something is that you're constantly learning. I use Logic sw
on our iMac computer and it has thousands upon thousands (seriously)
of options for mixing and creating a song. I have been learning all
of it by ear and trial/error. I recently found a few new settings
that make a world of a difference in sound quality. I started going
back to the W&C songs to get the best sound possible. It really is a
painful process. I find it's much easier to create new songs then to
modify the plugin's and audio quality of an old song.
I'll keep you posted as I continue to learn more about Logic. It's a
bit frustrating at times but the effort pays off in the long run.

Amy Winehouse in Brazil?

Apparently Amy Winehouse is looking to make a comeback. She semi-disappeared since her 2006 hit "Back to Black." According to Entertainment Weekly the album/tour start in Brazil. I am pretty excited about her comeback. Minus her personal stumbles she is an amazing talent.

Two Bonus Tracks and Two Events

We are going to be hosting (musically) a local Valentines day event in
February and are attempting to get our music into the first annual DC
music festival in May.

We've ready put together our "Wine & Champagne" CD and sold it as is
over the past few weeks. We want to have something new for both
events so we figured we would add two Bonus tracks making it a total
of 14 songs. I started working on one of them today but don't yet
have a complete vision for it just yet. We are excited to keep moving
forward with our company and see a bright future for ourselves as we
continue to make this happen.

DC Music Festival - May 2011

In May of 2011 Washington D.C. will be hosting its first annual music festival being held 4 blocks from our apartment/studio.  Submissions of musical works for consideration must be submitted by Feb 1st 2011.  We sent an email out to the music festival POC to get more details.  With this being the first festival we are not quite sure what to expect but are excited to find out.

See more below:

"The purpose of the DC Music Fest is to showcase some of the best artists and bands of the Washington, DC and surrounding areas. The inaugural event will not only focus on one style of music, but music as a whole, showcasing multiple genres of talent. One of a kind and never done before, this festival seeks to start a wave of support and awareness for the local music scene. Music Supervisor

Several months ago I started reading more information on getting music placement in films and other visual media.  A Music Supervisor is the production contact who would facilitate the placement process.

A Music Supervisor handles the process of choosing, negotiating, and incorporating pieces of music into visual media (such as a television show or movie), acting as a liaison between the creative and business ends of this process. This position is most active within media based industries, including live events, television, film, advertising, theater, and video gaming. Music supervisors may work within production companies, film studios, networks, music supervision companies, or do freelance work.

Author of Music Business Handbook and Career Guide, David Baskerville, notes, “This is one of the few production specialties that has almost unlimited growth potential, because there are no technical qualifications at all and no universally accepted job description. The field remains wide open to people with connections and the ability to get the job done.”

Jan 1st 2010 - A Duet with Apogee

Today we received the final parts for our new Apogee Duet.  The Duet provides the professional studio quality audio with recording, vocals, and listening for your music.  It's a compact and sleek looking device.

I have been listening to some of my old music with before and after audio samples using the Duet.  With the Duet you hear all of your musics flaws including any distortion, imbalance, and pitch in each plug-in.
Both Eric and I are excited to hear the elevated level of audio work we can now produce with the Duet.  As time goes by we will be sharing more of the Duet's capabilities via the sample tracks on our website.

Thanks for reading and we hope your New Year started off as well as ours has.
