The first few steps to starting a record label are standard for starting up most any other business. You need an EIN number which you can get via the IRS site, a business license with varied cost depending on what state you're in, and incorporate your business. There are many different types of business models to choose from but I chose Limited Liability Company. From what I've read thus far is that the company is a separate entity outside of the owner of the company. This means that if someone sues BeatScience Music Group they are suing the company and not me personally. This doesn't give you 100% immunity from a lawsuit but it does give you a warm and fuzzy about diving into a biz/industry you most likely know little about. LegalZoom.com facilitated most of the documents I mentioned above. I am not a sponsor for them nor am I saying you have to use them but I have personally found them to be helpful and effective in helping me get my label off of the ground.
